It was a pleasure and honor to be featured in Shout Out LA as a featured writer and artist!
“We had the good fortune of connecting with Christie Smirl and we’ve shared our conversation below.”
Hi Christie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
After 30 years of studying science and practicing acute care medicine my life took a deep shift towards art, music and writing. January 2020, just before COVID spread to the US, I took a full sabbatical from my hospital career and immersed all my energy into writing, devotional music and spiritual art. I often tell people that we are all here to contribute our own unique expression and life mission. Creative education and spirituality are my top two inspirations, and the inspiration in overflowing into black and red inked images, songs, poetry and books.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
This year I wrote and published five books and my fifth music album. Two of the books are children’s stories titled Brian’s’ Unfortunate Brainstorm and Cringy Cat – Ayurveda for children. Both are brightly illustrated funny stories that can quickly become bedtime favorites while also offering creative education for families. Brian’s Unfortunate Brainstorm offers children coping skills to weather life’s storms. Cringy Cat teaches kids which foods and lifestyles cause different types of “cringy” behavior. I also just finished a book called Chakra Alignment. It’s an 85 page education guide and journal to reclaim control over your chakras and life. I wanted this book to be colorful and informative, but also a sacred interactive tool for self transformation.
On a completely different note, I also wrote two spiritual books that were created and inspired through meditation. As my pen would touch the paper, I rarely knew what would appear. The first spiritual book is titled Alchemical Yogini – Transmissions to Ma. It is a collection of poems, prose and letters to The Divine Mother and a memoiric roadmap of alchemy. The other spiritual book, Kali Samadhi MMXX, is a cumulation of ritual poems, Sanskrit mantras and evocative drawings of Kali and other Goddess transmissions.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to give a few shoutouts! Shout out 1 to Itzpapalotl X Huitzitzilin, sacred artist, jeweler and owner of Children of Venus. Shout out 2 to Anirudha Das, sacred artist. Shout out 3 to Michelle Kearney Lopez, creative writer and instructor at Heart Centered Yoga for Kids. The last shoutout goes to my Mother who always told me that I could achieve anything with dedication and determination. I watched my Mother remodel our home with her bare hands, work in heavy construction as a pipe fitter / welder and then turn around and create the most delicately beautiful stain glass window and paintings. She was not afraid to jump in and try her hand at any skill. She never said “I can’t to that.”, therefore those limiting thoughts where never implanted in my psyche.
